Sometimes something from ancient times lends itself to problems confronting humans and all life on the planet today. It happens that part of a verse* in a daily lectionary** does. In it, the letter-writer Paul (c. 5 to 64-65 AD) asks a simple rhetorical question that might be extended to say, “How can anyone be expected to place any credence in something totally unknown to them or anyone around them?”
Here is how he put it, in a translation into modern English:
“How are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard?” — Romans 10:14b***
The question can apply to understanding both the global heating progressively altering climates as we breathe, and to understanding the mass murders of Sept. 11, 2001, that have led directly to a string of wars including several currently underway.
For decades humans relying on the “news media” were denied essential truths associated with climate change, and still are about “9/11.” This is because, as Upton Sinclair and Michael Albert would understand, these truths could sharply reduce revenue streams; and because, as Al Gore and company understand, they are inconvenient.
